June 26 - Thailand celebrates "Sunthorn Phu", the June 26 - Thailand celebrates "Sunthorn Phu", the country's most famous poet. 🖋📜
Sunthorn Phu was born in 1786 during the reign of King Rama I. He is famous for writing many great poetic works, especially in the form of Thai octameter poem or "klon pad". His poems contain rhymes across stanza as well as rhymes within lines, making them exceptionally melodic. Sunthorn Phu also is known for his ability to incoporate insightful reflections on the nature of life, human emotions, and thoughts into his works.
Some subject matters in Sunthorn Phu’s works can be considered progressive for his time. Female characters in his works, for example, take the lead as assertive and quick-witted characters, instead of being portrayed as meak like in other classical Thai literary works. His works also contain characters of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds, reflecting great international awareness.
Sunthorn Phu passed away in 1855 at the age of 69. Today, he is remembered as one of Thailand's most beloved and famous poets. His most well-known works are "Phra Aphai Mani" (a fantastical epic about the adventures of prince) and "Niras Phukhao Thong" (Sunthorn Phu's poetic account of his journey to the Golden Mountain Pagoda in Ayutthaya).
